Health & Humanities Pop Up Institute (PUI) 2018

Health & Humanities Pop Up Institute (PUI) 2018

The Health and Humanities Pop-Up Institute convened scholars from the Humanities Institute, and the Dell Medical School, and the greater UT Austin community to conduct an interdisciplinary exploration of the impact of humanistic approaches to medicine on patients and healthcare workers. The Institute was organized around three fields of inquiry:

(i) Narrative Medicine/Narratives of Medicine - how effective care, including communication of illness and disease in ways that impact the success of treatment, requires the ability to tell and recognize stories and narratives;

(ii) Humanistic Approaches to Equity and Diversity - how humanities training can further medical inquiry into health disparities, increase cultural competency, and integrate non-Western and biomedical practices of care; and,

(iii) Community Practice - how the medical humanities can foster partnerships with community organizations in order to develop a more caring society, including increased support for healthcare workers.

In order to foster a sustainable, coordinated medical humanities program at UT, the Pop-Up Institute aimed to address the need to measure the objective health outcomes of humanistic approaches to medicine with regard to patients, patient communities, and the medical community itself.

Keywords

The keyword discussions are an attempt to build a common vocabulary to identify key points of tension in various disciplinary perspectives on Health and Humanities.  In investigating keywords, we are influenced by the cultural critic Raymond Williams' keywords project, which is discussed comprehensively on this website.

During the Pop Up Institute, individual participants provided definitions and  the group engaged in discussions around the various perspectives through which one could define the words.
