The Marine Science Library is a primary source for marine-related and aquatic information, especially pertaining to freshwater inflow in the state and in the Gulf of Mexico. It holds several Texas state publications relating to fisheries and water resources.
Subject disciplines include: fish physiology and ecology; biogeochemistry; ecosystem dynamics; marine relative to botany, chemistry, geology, microbiology, toxicology; aquaculture and mariculture; biological and physical oceanography; reproductive physiology of marine animals and endocrinology.
Due to limited resources and space, UT Libraries staff must be highly selective in evaluating and accepting donations of library materials.

Dr. Elmer J. LUND, the first director of the Marine Science Institute, collected materials in marine science, which formed the basis of the institute's library, during 1946-47. With nearly 65,000+ volumes in foreign and domestic titles, the library's collection supports the curriculum of the Department of Marine Science in the College of Natural Sciences and also serves the research unit of the University of Texas Marine Science Institute in Port Aransas, Texas.

The University of Texas Marine Science Institute has been in the forefront of research, education, and outreach in the Texas Coastal zone for over 60 years. Its first director and a professor of zoology, Dr. E. J. Lund established the scientific journal, Publications of the Institute of Marine Science, now known as Contributions in Marine Science. Its first volume began in 1945 with Lund as editor. Current issues include reviews and monographs of basic or regional importance in marine science, with emphasis on the Gulf of Mexico and surrounding areas.
