Map analysis from UGS302 - The Art of Mapping - Prof. Peter Hall
Choose a map and analyze it using the following questions we devised from the Denis Wood reading* (reprised below):
1. Who produced it?
2. What is being emphasized on the map?
3. How are colors being used?
4. What does the legend emphasize?
5. What is left out the legend/map?
6. Date of production?
7. What are the decorative symbols? What are they saying?
8. Any tell-tale text or slogans that reveal an agenda?
Analyze the cultural, economic and environmental factors at work in a map selected from the list below, or the map you have researched at PCL. Using the Monmonier, Tufte and Wood texts as a guide, include a close reading of the generalizations, assumptions, cartographic "lies" and graphic devices used to make the map a powerful rhetorical device. As. part of your discussion make connections to at least two other maps or mappings, that, in your opinion share formal or conceptual qualities with your map.
Present your draft paper to the class on October 12 (or 14) as a 5 minute slide lecture. (In Powerpoint, PDF or Keynote)
Be energetic and imaginative in your research, and rigorous in the development of your argument.
Visit the PCL Map Collection (Map Room) and locate 3 different types of map of the same area. Answer the following questions about each map:
1. What type of map is it?
2. What is the title?
3. When was it made?
4. Who made it?
5. What is the scale?
6. How is different than the other two maps?
