1) Check the syllabus to determine assignments and foundational skills needed to complete those assignments.
2) Get a sense of your students’ abilities. Lead a discussion about this, or ask them to submit a short paragraph explaining the last research project they were assigned and the resources they used, for example.
3) Ask yourself if the lecture prepares students for their assignments? If not, think about devoting a discussion section to covering these skills.
4) Explore the Information Literacy Toolkit or Teaching Assistant Guide to find materials to support your students, or work with your faculty member to get Teaching and Learning Services involved in your course in another way.
