Evaluating News

Think about:

  • Where the report is from (geographically in the case of your class) and how that might slant the story.
  • What the publication is - can you find out more about it? Is it well known and well-respected?
  • The evidence and sources they cite.
  • Whether the author acknowledge what they still don't know? 
  • Whether or not the article is marked "opinion" or "editorial".
  • The tone of the piece.  Is it overly sensational?
