Teaching Tips and Resources for Librarians

Librarians as Teachers

Developing as a Teacher

Effective teaching is a dynamic process, not a static endeavor. Whether you have years of experience or are just beginning to teach, there is always room to expand your repertoire, explore a new approach, or reflect on an aspect of your practice. This guide is intended to provide strategies, ideas, information, and resources, beneficial to veterans and novices alike.

If you have questions, want to talk about a particular class or teaching topic, or are looking for a resource not found in this guide, librarians from TLS are happy to meet with you individually.

Communities of Practice

Depending on your environment and area of instruction, it can be easy to feel isolated or stuck in a rut in the classroom. Engaging in a community of practice can provide valuable opportunities to discuss, strategize, and connect with peers and colleagues.

Discussions About Resources and Teaching (DART), formerly known as RIOT, is an open group for all UT librarians who teach. DART meets several times each semester and focuses on current literature, emerging trends, and other pertinent topics of interest. Have an article or topic you would like to discuss? Contact TLS to sign up to lead the next session!

There are also similar communities beyond UT that can offer ideas and support for your teaching.
