UGS 302: Finding Your Path / Green

Keywords are important

Maybe the most important!

If you are not finding anything...or if you are finding too many things...you should rethink your search strategy:

  • What words you are using to ask for what you want
    • Don't always use 'climate change' or 'global warming'. Think about the signs of climate change (increased temps, polar ice caps melting, wildfires) as well as regulations people would argue about (emissions, methane leaks). These are the specific things people will argue about.
  • When searching for opposing viewpoints, you will need to think about your keywords carefully
    • What words do people use when they want to downplay or refute climate science?
    • Who profits when regulations for environmental protections are minimized?
  • Where you are looking - make sure the site or database you are searching covers the info and evidence you need.
    • Is the site made up of data collected by scientists?
    • Is the site about policy recommendations made by industry or political interest groups?
