How to Read a Scientific Paper

Welcome to the UT Libraries

This short video will introduce you to many of the services and materials the Libraries provide to UT students. 

In class

To do on your own: Open both sources and skim them for just a couple of minutes - you won't be able to really read them, but try to get an idea of what kind of source you're looking at. If your source has an abstract, that might be a good place to concentrate. Use Google if you need to to help you find out more about the source. Notice the structure of the article and any characteristics about the article that you want to discuss with your group.

Then, talk about the following at your table (be ready to discuss with the larger group):

  1. What would you call each of these sources (or what type of source is each one)?
  2. What evidence did the author use as they wrote their source?
  3. Who wrote each of these sources? Who published them? What does that tell you about the source?
  4. Could these sources be useful to you as you work on your project? How?
