Research Speed-Dating

Research Speed-Dating is an informal research communication practice event in which researchers take turns talking about their research or giving feedback to other researchers. Through a series of rounds, researchers apply the feedback to create layperson-friendly research stories.

Check out what the 2021-2022 Three-Minute Thesis winners had to say about Research Speed-Dating!

Vasavi Shabrish, 1st Place & People's Choice winner

"With the help of the speed dating workshop and one-on-one appointment, I developed a presentation in simple language that would be relevant to a diverse audience while emphasizing the importance of research to the community. One of the most thoughtful aspects of the speed dating workshop was the audience answering pre-specified questions to help gauge if the presenter addressed the topic correctly. An individual meeting provided in-depth insight into the visual representation and enhanced the language used to communicate the research topic. The presentation and success of the 3MT competition were both aided by these tools."

Prasoon Goyal, Runner-up winner

"The Research Speed-Dating event enabled me to get feedback on my initial script for the 3-minute thesis competition, from experts specializing in science communication and other graduate students. This helped me identify which parts of the script were good, and which ones needed to be refined, resulting in a significantly improved final script."

Three-Minute Thesis

In this annual competition, students present their research in layperson-friendly talks, delivered in three minutes or less. All currently enrolled masters and doctoral students in all disciplines are eligible to participate. Talks must be about work that's conducted here at UT.
