Google Search Tips

  • Search for an exact phrase by putting the words in quotes
    • ex: "university of texas"
    • ex: "UT-Austin"
    • ex: "UT students"
  • Add another term to narrow your search if you are getting a lot of irrelevant results
    • ex: "university of texas" austin
  • Create one expanded search for multiple useful related terms using OR 
    • ex: you are searching for info about mental health
    • search is:  "mental health" OR "mental illness" OR anxiety
  • Use the asterisk (*) wildcard for variant spellings or word endings
    • ex: prevent* searches for prevent, preventing and prevention
  • Search within a site by using site:
    • ex: "mental health" site:utexas.edu
  • Search within a type of site by using site:
    • ex: mental health statistics site:.gov
    • can also do this for .org, .edu, etc. 
  • Exclude a term or site by using -
    • ex: if you are getting results for UT El Paso, you can eliminate that
    • ex: -"el paso"

UT Statistics

I was not able to find any statistics about use of the Counseling & Mental Health Center or any other UT-specific stats. If I track any down, I'll add them here. You can drill down to the state level, however, using the SAMHDA data in the Find Statistics box on the "Find Information to Support your Recommendations" page.
