Teaching Philosophy

Teaching Philosophy: Introduction

There are multiple ways to approach a statement of teaching philosophy; however, all approaches should provide insight into three questions about how you teach: 1) What is your conception of teaching and learning?; 2) How would you describe the way you teach?; 3) Why do you teach the way that you do (what justifies this approach)? Responding to these questions allows educators to explain the rationale that underpins their approach to teaching, while also articulating larger learning goals they actively try to realize in their classes. A statement of teaching philosophy also allows educators to point to and explain elements in their teaching portfolio, thereby providing pedagogical / theoretical context for other teaching documents. All of this work demonstrates to future employers that you are reflexive and purposeful about your teaching since you can connect pedagogy to practice.
