Browse the PCL Stacks

The PCL's print collections are particularly strong for Victorian Literature.

You'll find early editions from the 19th century and more recent critical editions with helpful resources and top scholarship. You'll find letters, biographies, and more by and about these authors. Browsing physical libraries can be a fun and serendipitous experience!

  • What are "the stacks"? The stacks are the part of the library with the books and shelves!
  • How do you browse? The PCL is organized by the Library of Congress cataloging system. The Library of Congress assigns each book a unique call number in a combination of letters and numbers.  Books by the same author and books about similar topics are shelved together within a call number range
Once you identify the call number range for the author or topic you want to explore, you use the call numbers to identify the correct Floor and Floor Section in the PCL where you'll find these books.
  • Need help navigating the PCL? Use the PCL Stacks Guide and Floor Maps. A digital version is available on the touch screens next to the elevators on each floor of the PCL.
  • All the books and authors for this class are on the PCL 6th Floor, in section 6F. See below for specific call number ranges.
  • Questions? Contact Gina or ask the staff at the PCL Check Out Desk for assistance.

Browse the PCL's Dewey Decimal Collection!

The Deweys, as we fondly call them, are the university's original library collection built between 1884-1960. The Deweys include many early editions of 19th century novels, with editions published in the Great Britain or the United States. It is a true joy to browse these old books!

To browse the Deweys:

  • Go to the PCL 4th Floor.
  • Browse Section 4G
  • British Literature is in the 820 call number range

Note: The Dewey Decimal call numbers are made up of numbers only. Library of Congress uses a combination of letters and numbers.
