Uploading Media to Your Book

When you first enter your Book, you will have a blank page with a menu of icons along the top. While the page tells you to select the pencil icon, let's first upload some media to work with.

  • Hover your mouse over the icon of the arrow in the box.
  • The drop down menu provides several ways to add media, but for now, select "upload media files" under "Files and URLs."

You may also choose to insert media hosted elsewhere via a link, but for this guide, we will be uploading an image.

You will arrive on the upload page.

Here you will enter the title and description of your media, then select a file to upload by selecting the "Choose File" button.

Image Metadata:

Metadata is information about a document and can include attributions, usage rights, and other information of scholarly interest. For more information about Metadata, see the Metadata section of this guide.

  • To add Metadata, click the "Add Additional Metadata" button from the upload page.
  • Next, choose a metadata schema from the drop down menu and check the boxes for fields you would like to include.
  • Click "Add fields" when ready to proceed.

Now these fields will appear on the main upload page. Fill in the fields and when ready, click the "Upload" button.

You will then be brought to a page for the media file uploaded.

  • Scrolling down past the media, you will see the description as well as tabs for details, citations, and the source file.
  • Details will reveal metadata, citations will point to any pages which utilize this media file, and source file links directly to the upload.

Annotation

Annotations within Scalar allow you to embed captions, metadata, or additional information in an uploaded piece of media.

To start annotating, select the "Paper Clip" icon in the tool bar at the top of your selected media's page.

From this page, click and drag on your image to select the area for your annotation. Enter text to serve as the annotation's title, then click save.

Click "save" and scroll down.

Now you will see all your annotations in a more detailed format. Here you can edit the coordinates, as well as entering further description and adding tags if you wish.

Click the "Done" button when finished annotating.

The Done button will return you to the media page, where any annotations you added should be visible. Keep in mind, you will later have the chance to show or hide these annotations when utilizing the media on a Page.

Importing and Annotating Video

Videos can also be used in Scalar, but are added in a slightly different way. While video files like MP4 and WebM can be uploaded in the same way as images, they are still limited to 2 MB in size - too small to be useful in many cases. The better way to add video to your Scalar exhibit is to link the media from elsewhere on the Internet.

Just like with uploaded media, hover your mouse over the upload icon (the arrow in the box), select "Files and URLs" and this time click "Link to media files. This will bring you to a media creation page similarly to when uploading an image.

Just as with uploaded images, you will have options for the text and layout of your media's page. Additionally, you will have a box for the media's URL. Keep the media type as "Standard Media," the other options are used only in specific cases.

When you are ready, click "Save and View" to finish creating the media page and confirm your media was embedded.

Just as with uploaded media, this video can now be incorporated into other pages of your Scalar exhibit.

Another feature shared with uploaded media is the ability to annotate the content. Click the paperclip icon in the tool bar to begin.

To add an annotation, first click the "+" plus icon in the bottom left of the page. You can now give your annotation a title and add the content. Video annotations can be given time codes to appear during specific sections of the video. Clicking the green "set" button will change the time code for either the start or end of the annotation, setting it to the current time in the video.

Click the "done" button when you are finished annotating the video.

Your annotations will appear under the video for the duration of the time range you provided.

With your media uploaded, we can now move on to creating content pages!
