Assignment:
Write a one-page paper about your selected book and how it relates to the artist's larger body of work.
Part One: Special Collections at FAL
At the Fine Arts Library you will view artists' books that use photography as a medium. During class, you will spend time looking at different books in order to select one to use for this assignment.
Questions to consider:
- Is it a high production object or handmade?
- What is your experience as a viewer of the book? Does it challenge your idea of what a book is?
- How do the photographs work together to tell a narrative?
- Does the book include text?
- What is the relationship between text and images?
- How does the title relate to the photographs?
Part Two: Writing and Research
Your one-page paper will need to include two citations. One citation should be a print book from the collections at UT Libraries. The second citation should be an article that you find in a library database. These citations should help defend your viewpoint of the artist’s work. Make sure the citation style you use is the same for both citations.
If you can’t find a book specifically about your artist, you can search broadly to look subject matter or photographic processes.
