Fall Course Reserves Requests for Faculty

Course Reserves Requests

In lieu of physical reserves, the UT Libraries will provide electronic copies of Libraries materials essential to Fall 2020 courses where possible. Faculty and course instructors may place requests and will receive materials to host in their Canvas courses. Libraries staff will determine what can be provided, either through existing or purchased electronic items, by scanning sections from available print materials where possible, or working with faculty and course instructors to find alternative Open Educational Resources (OER) online content. 

Requests may be submitted throughout the Fall semester with at least one week of lead time.


Why isn't the Libraries providing physical reserves?

Items on reserve are checked out multiple times per day.  Because we are quarantining materials between uses, placing items on reserve physically would lessen access to those materials. In addition, PCL will be the only UT Libraries location open with limited numbers allowed in the building at one time.

I have materials on reserve now. What happens with those materials?

You may request scans of any materials, even those on reserve, through the Course Reserves Scan request form.

I am not sure if my request is copyright compliant.  

The University has an institutional license to the Copyright Clearance Center (CCC). This license allows us to share text based resources via Canvas without needing to ask permission or consider fair use. You can share articles and book chapters with this license, but you can’t share scans of entire books that are still protected by copyright. For other copyright questions, you may either submit your request and we will work with you on alternatives if your request isn't copyright compliant, or you may contact your subject liaison librarian for copyright guidance and help identifying alternative resources if need be.

What happens if I need something the Libraries doesn't own?

We will try to purchase an electronic version of the material you need. If that isn't possible, we will refer you to your subject liaison librarian for help identifying alternative resources.

I got a link to a book in HathiTrust instead of a scan of the book or chapter I requested.  Why?

HathiTrust is temporarily providing electronic access to over 40% of our print collections during the pandemic, an access we are committed to retaining as long as possible to serve our many users who are now learning and working remotely. In order to retain this access, we must comply with HathiTrust requirements which include not providing access to items in our print collections in any way but via HathiTrust if they are full text in HathiTrust. For more about HathiTrust, see this page

I got a link to an ebook.  How do I use that in my class?

Add the link to your Canvas course and instruct your students that they will need to log in with their UT EIDs to access it. Some ebooks have limits on how many users may access it simultaneously so encourage your students to log out when they are done reading.

Can I request non-print materials such as DVDs or CDs?

Yes. We will provide streaming access when possible.

Will you scan personal items I need for my class if I bring them to the library?

For health and safety reasons, we are unable to scan personal items unless you already had them on reserve in the Libraries prior to the pandemic.

How long will it take for you to fill my request?

We expect to take approximately one week to fill requests. However, if we need to purchase an item or if we get a higher volume of requests than expected, it may take longer.

How will I receive my scans?

You will receive an email with instructions about how to download pdfs, or a link to electronic versions of your materials.

Are there limits to this service?

In addition to copyright restrictions discussed above, publisher models limit the ability of libraries to purchase ebook versions of many textbooks and youth books. In addition, for health and safety reasons, we have limited staff working on campus to fulfill requests. For that reason, we ask you to limit your requests to essential course materials only.
