UGS 302: Sexual Violence Across Mexican Cultures / González-López

Developing a search strategy

Why keywords are important

  • Those who research these topics are using jargon and terms that are familiar to experts within the field - learn their language.
  • Asking databases the same way you ask Google is a bad idea - the databases want to help you find exactly what you want. Google wants to get you to the information that someone else wants you to see ($$).
  • Be as precise as possible, be as flexible as possible. See below.

Example of advanced search

(open these images in new tabs to see larger)

STEP 1: Your search may be broader than mine, but here is an example of a clean, precise search. I want to know how telenovelas depict sexual violence. I brainstormed other terms for it (OR will search all the terms at once) and then narrowed my search with more terms (AND):

search related terms separated by OR all on one line. Use and to add keywords and narrow your search

STEP 2:

You may decide at this point to limit to journal articles or books.

STEP 3:

From your results, do any stand out? Why? Write down new keywords and controversies to explore.

highlight important terms in a record.

Step 4:

Maybe your topic is different now? It's important to be flexible.

change your language to match what you see in the literature. Be flexible.
