How to use this guide

Your assignment asks you to answer the following questions about the artwork you have chosen to research:

  • Who has owned this work since it was first made (its provenance or ownership history), who owns it now, where is it currently located, or has it been destroyed? If the latter, does it exist as a reconstruction, reenactment, and/or reinvention?
  • If it exists as a reconstruction, reenactment, reinvention, or on-going project, how have issues of authorship & authenticity been handled and by whom (the artist, artist estate, galleries, collectors)? Does it exist as one unique reconstruction, as an edition, as an “open-source” set of instructions for anyone to execute, as an on-going project?
  • If the original exists, has it been physically or conceptually altered during its existence? By whom and for what reasons?
  • What is its exhibition history? Where and how has it been exhibited in the past and currently?
  • What controversies have any or all of these circumstances – ownership, exhibition history, alterations, reconstruction, or destruction – generated?
  • How has the work’s relationship to the public(s) been altered over the course of the history of the object/project?
