FAQs

FAQs - Borrowing and Account Information

Will I need to create a new account in the new system?

  • No.  Your account will automatically be created and populated with the items you have checked out.

Will there be any changes to services during the migration to the new system?

  • There will be times, primarily over winter intercession, when some services will be affected.
    • Request and recall services will be suspended on December 20.  This means you will not be able to recall or place a hold on an item, request for an item to be sent to a different library location for check out, or request an item from storage. These services will resume January 7, 2020.
    • My Library Account  will be suspended on December 20, which means you will not be able to renew items or see what is checked out to you. On January 7, a new version of My Library Account will become available and contain a record of all items currently checked out to you.
    • No library items will come due from December 20, 2019 through January 6, 2020.
    • Requests for scans of materials and interlibrary loan will continue to function as usual.

I have saved lists of items in my account in the current Library Catalog.  What will happen to these?

  • There is no way to move these over to the new search tools system. To save your list of items, before December 20, log into your account, open your list and choose Export List. See these in-depth instructions for help, or Ask a Librarian.  The new system will have a "pin to favorites" feature which will allow you to recreate and add new items to reading lists.

I have preferred searches set up in my account in the current Library Catalog.  What will happen to these?

  • There is no way to move these over to the new search tools system. Instead, make note of your preferred searches before December 20. One option is to log into your account, open your list of preferred searches, and take a screen shot.

I have a list of all the items I checked out in my account because I selected the My Reading History option in the current Library Catalog. What will happen to this list?

  • There is no way to move this over to the new search tools system. If you would like to save your current reading history, log into your account before December 20, select Reading History and select Export My Reading Lists. See these in-depth instructions for help, or Ask a Librarian.

In addition, the new search tools system does not have a Reading History feature.  Instead, you will only be able to see items you've returned until someone else checks them out.

For how long will I be able to check out books?

  • The amount of time you can check out a book (loan period) will remain the same. Loan periods can be found here.

FAQs - Content & Search Options

I use the search box on the Libraries home page.  Will that still be available?

Yes.  You will still be able to use the search box on the Libraries home page to search across many of our physical and electronic resources at once.  Because this search box will be powered by our new system, you will have more robust and reliable links to online full text.

How will this new search tools system impact the speed of searches?

The new system will return search results more quickly.

Will I still be able to search the library catalog?

You will still be able to search the library catalog for physical and electronic holdings, as you do now.  Options include searching by keyword, title, author/creator, subject heading, ISBN/ISSN, and other advanced identifiers.  You will also be able to limit by library location, resource type, language, and date.

Will I still be able to search specific databases?

Yes.  There is no change to individual database searching.

Will I still be able to see books available at the Law Library using the new search tools system?

In order to see what is at the Law Library, you will have to search their catalog directly at https://tallons.law.utexas.edu/. UT students, faculty and staff may still continue to borrow materials from the Law Library.

FAQs - Links

I have saved links to resources in my reference manager (ex: Zotero, EndNote), my Canvas page or elsewhere.  I got these links from the current Library Catalog or by using the search box on the Libraries home page.  Will they still work?

The links will no longer work after the fall semester ends. Beginning January 7, 2020, you will be able to create new links by searching for the items in the new search tools system. Look for the permalink symbol (permalink symbol that looks like a paperclip)  to find a stable link to the resource.

FAQs - Miscellaneous

  • Purchase recommendations, including reserve purchases, will be held until January 7th for consideration and processing.  If you have an emergency purchase or loan, please request through InterLibrary Services
  • You will be able to request Benson Latin American Collection materials that are in the Library Storage Facility more directly.  Instead of contacting Benson staff to do so, you will be able to place your request online to have the materials brought to the Benson.
  • If you log into the system, you will be able to see loan periods (the length of time you can borrow an item before you have to return or renew it).  This will be particularly useful for students who use reserve material and only learn the loan period when they check the item out.
