Map Collections

A collection of paleogeographic maps showing the landscapes and oceans of ancient Earth through hundreds of millions of years of geologic time. To date, we've purchased all of the series published by Deep Time Maps. The links below take you to a landing page for the series. Each series contains many individual maps.

Access is limited to current UT students, faculty, and staff

Usage permissions:

  • UT scholars and students may use the Deep Time Maps in academic settings for research, scholarship, reports, publications, and other educational purposes. Data and georeferencing may be added.
  • Authors may transmit to a third party in hard copy or electronically, minimal, insubstantial amounts of the Licensed Material (Maps) for personal use or scholarly, educational, or scientific research or professional use but in no case for resale or commercial purposes.
  • When distributed the Maps must be labeled with the following credit line: “© YYYY Colorado Plateau Geosystems Inc.” using the date the series was created as described in the relevant Appendix.
  • Instructors may post the maps in Canvas for classroom use, as long as your course page requires EID authentication.
  • YOU MAY NOT:
    • Post any portion of the Maps on the internet, Face Book, YouTube, Vimeo, or any other internet-based software, service, application, or the like.
    • Remove any copyright notice, proprietary information notices, or other notice contained in or displayed in connection with the Maps

The Tobin International Geological Map Collection consists of more than 47,000 maps, atlases and map texts on geology and related subjects worldwide, but is particularly strong in maps of Texas and select U.S. and foreign areas of geologic interest to UT geologists.

To search Library Catalog for printed maps:

  • Search for your geographic area of interest
  • Then use the limiters along to the left and choose: Resource Type = Maps
  • If the map you need is in our storage facility, use the "Get It" link to have it brought to campus for you

Many books and reports in our collections also contain maps. To find those, do not use the Resource Type = Maps limiter. Simply looks for items that are a topical match, and review the catalog record to see if the item includes maps....
