Tips for Finding Statistics

Pew Research Center

Pew Research Center publishes detailed fact sheets and reports on racial, ethnic, and immigrant groups in the U.S. However, there's no single hub where all fact sheets are listed — so using Google search is the fastest and most reliable way to find them.

How to Search

Option 1: General Info About Immigrant Groups

Use this formula in the Google search bar:

[group] immigrants in the U.S. site:pewresearch.org

Example Searches:

  • Mexican immigrants in the U.S. site:pewresearch.org
  • Vietnamese immigrants in the U.S. site:pewresearch.org
  • Somali immigrants in the U.S. site:pewresearch.org

Option 2: Find Pew's Fact Sheets on U.S. Racial/Ethnic Groups

Pew's fact sheets follow a consistent structure that includes:

  • Population size
  • Age & nativity
  • Education
  • Income & poverty
  • Health & insurance
  • State of residence

Use this formula in the Google search bar:

facts on [group] Americans site:pewresearch.org

Example Searches:

  • facts on Asian Americans site:pewresearch.org
  • facts on Latino Americans site:pewresearch.org
  • facts on Arab Americans site:pewresearch.org

Migration Policy Institute

Migration Policy Institute, or MPI, focuses specifically on immigration. Their "Spotlight Articles" provide full profiles of immigrant groups by country of birth and include detailed data on:

  • Income
  • Languages spoken
  • Health insurance
  • Migration pathways
  • Unauthorized status
  • Geographic concentration

How to Search

Option 1: Find MPI's Spotlight Articles

Like Pew, it's best to use a scoped Google search to explore the content on MPI's website.

Use this formula in the Google search bar:

[group] immigrants site:migrationpolicy.org

Example Search:

Vietnamese immigrants site:migrationpolicy.org

Option 2: Access MPI's "Spotlight" Archive
