Developing your topic

Encyclopedias and other reference materials

The following were chosen because they are related to the University Lectures:

Why is this step important?

topic development is an iterative process. You come up with an idea, test it through searching, refine it through learning more in readings and then reformulate it

How do I use these in my research?

The Lectures will inspire curiosity. Perhaps there is something that resonated with your experiences or with topics in your major. The encyclopedias are places where you can find:

  • Broad overviews of your topics
  • What people are arguing within a topic
  • What types of experts work within the topic
  • Alternate keywords and jargon you may not yet be familiar with
  • Stakeholders: Who is affected? Who is working on solutions?
  • References/bibliographies: The easiest way to find important readings within a topic is through these reference entries
