UT Libraries offers several different programs for working with maps in our computer labs. There are many other web-based applications that can be used to create maps. Additionally, the PCL is home to the Perry-Castañeda Maps Collection, which includes over 250,000 maps.

ArcGIS is a powerful program for creating maps and working with geospatial data. It is more flexible, but has a higher learning curve than other mapping applications.
ArcGIS is available on the PC workstations on the entry level of PCL.
QGIS is a powerful open source mapping application, similar to ArcGIS.
QGIS is available in the Data Lab in the PCL Scholars Commons. It is open source and can also be downloaded for free for your personal use.
Google Earth is a beginner-friendly mapping tool. You can explore the earth through an interface that is similar to Google maps, as well as create tours and import vector data.

Palladio mixes mapping, timelines, and network visualization in a single tool. The tool was developed by CESTA at Stanford associated with the project, Mapping the Republic of Letters.
