We often think we have to cite because we'll get in trouble if we don't follow the rules.
- Yes, not citing the work of others is academic dishonesty. Plagiarism gets people expelled, fired, and destroys reputations.
But, why is it against the rules?
- Intellectual property - no matter where you find a piece of information, no matter the format or packaging - it is someone's property and you must give credit. It is an issue of ethics.
- If you don't cite something you could be in trouble if that turns out to be wrong. Now you're wrong. Citation is protection.
- Information is conversation - citing something in your work allows others to trace research back. Others citing your work allows the field to advance and for the research around a topic to grow.
- Citing an influential thinker or a solid data set build credibility for your argument and bolsters your case with evidence.
