Networking & Word of Mouth

Networking & Word of Mouth

Opinion: Nothing beats talking to like-minded people who are invested in your field of interest. The information people have collected and stored via casual encounters, professional engagements and/or targeted strategy is immeasurable. Peers are the first resource in the process of discovery. That said, it is advisable that a person seeking work in journalism be intentionally and regularly in community with others who are in a consistent state of contact with journalism. This may happen through:

Conferences, meetups, peers, classmates, professors, editors, managing editors, journalists, multidisciplinary writers, social media, webinars, discussion forums, authors, news outlets’ LinkedIn pages…

Challenge: What local groups within your community meet based on a mutual interest in journalism and communications? How might you meet people involved?
