Emily Bristol is a PhD candidate at the University of Texas Marine Science Institute advised by Dr. Zhanfei Liu and Dr. Jim McClelland. Her dissertation work examines terrestrial organic matter that enters the coastal Arctic Ocean. In the marine environment, this organic matter can be an important source of energy and nutrients for marine food webs and/or fuel greenhouse gas production. Emily’s dissertation research provides novel insights on the composition and biodegradability of organic matter supplied by coastal erosion and groundwater to the Alaska Beaufort Sea, demonstrating the importance of these inputs to nearshore biogeochemical cycling.
