Pick and Test a Topic

Pick and Test a Topic

Picking a topic is hard! These approaches will help.

Step 1: Identify a potential topic

1. Use a chatbot like ChatGPT or Microsoft CoPilot (UT has a subscription) to brainstorm topics, or Google for potential topics.

2.  Check out background sources like Wikipedia or other encyclopedias to see what interests you. The Libraries provides access to databases with vetted background information including SAGE Knowledge (do a search and then filter under Content Type to Reference on the left hand side) and Gale eBooks.

Step 2: Test the scope of your topic - is it too broad or too narrow? Is there enough or too much about your topic out there?

1. Read a background source (see #2 above) on your topic. Can you cover your topic within the parameters of the assignment? For example, you might choose to cover AI, algorithmic bias and healthcare and find that there is so much that you might need to narrow down to maternal care.

2. Search Google, GoogleScholar and/or a library search tool for your topic. Scan quickly to see if you can find enough or if there is too much and you need to narrow it more. Suggested library tools are on the Find Sources page.
