Patenting and Trademarking Activity as a Source of Information About Technology

Analyzing patent and trademark applications (and issued documents) help us understand trends in technology through factors including:

  • Field of invention / business activity
    • Where are inventors and entrepreneurs focusing their attention in a particular period? 
  • Geographic areas supporting invention and other business activity
    • How many inventors are from a certain city or country?
    • Over time, what is the trend for invention or for trademark applications in a country?
  • Companies supporting invention or trademarking
  • Who is inventing . . . Are they academic, independent, government, corporate?

Finding Patent and Trademark Statistics

1. For those currently affiliated with UT-Austin, a good place to find statistics on patents and trademarks is Statista.  The parameters are preset.  If you need other options, try going to the source of the data table:
