Creating an Outline

Guidelines for writing an outline in APA

There are no official APA guidelines for writing an outline. However, the following tips are generally recommended for outline assignments in APA.

  1. Add a cover page with the (working) title of your paper in bold, your name, institution, course number and title, instructor, and due date
  2. APA 7 no longer requires a running head for student papers, only for professional papers
  3. Include page numbers
  4. Fonts & sizes accepted
    • 11-point Calibri, 11-point Arial, 10-point Lucida Sans Unicode, 12-point Times New Roman, 11-point Georgia, or 10-point Computer Modern (APA 6 only allowed 12-point Times New Roman)
  5. Double space your outline
  6. Include proper APA-style in-text citations throughout the outline
  7. Add a proper APA-style bibliography at the end of your outline
    • Sources should be in alphabetical order by the last name of the first author
