Find Sources

Get Started

  1. Keywords will be different depending on the tool you're searching. In the catalog, you may use a general keyword like musical theatre or the name of your show; in a history or sociology database you might not use the name of your show at all; when looking for a review, you might have to be very careful about the dates you search for.
  2. A possible search strategy for a topic on urban life and West Side Story might include:
Source Type Search Here Sample Search Terms
Scholarly Articles Library databases or Library advanced search - choose books and more

Title of your musical, the writer/composer, or song + a theme

Example: West Side Story

For contextual information, try searching other databases like those in sociology.

Example: urban AND New York AND 1960s (there are many possible variations of this search)

Scholarly Books Choose Library Catalog on the library advanced search General keywords such as "West Side Story" or "musical theatre"
Reviews New York Times Historical  "West Side Story", limit search by year to 1961-1962, look for reviews in results
Other Primary Sources This guide will help you think about what a primary source is; Google or film streaming services might be a starting place to locate your primary source. If you have questions, ask your librarian or professor.
