Gold Standard Science

Background and Essential Details

Executive Order (EO) 14303 issued May 23, 2025 on Restoring Gold Standard Science called for science carried out by or with the support of federal agencies to be conducted in a manner that is: (i) reproducible; (ii) transparent; (iii) communicative of error and uncertainty; (iv) collaborative and interdisciplinary; (v) skeptical of its findings and assumptions; (vi) structured for falsifiability of hypotheses; (vii) subject to unbiased peer review; (viii) accepting of negative results as positive outcomes; and (ix) without conflicts of interest. This executive order instructed the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) to issue guidance for federal agencies regarding the "implementation of 'Gold Standard Science' in the conduct and management of their respective scientific activities". This guidance was released June 23, 2025 and asked for federal agencies to development implementation plans by August 22, 2025. Those implementation plans have now been released and can be accessed using the links below.
