The UT Libraries is pleased to offer two positions in our three-year residency program for early career librarians and archivists. We seek prospective applicants looking to deepen their experience in the field of academic libraries and/or archives. The residency program will provide specialized training, continuing education, and mentorship based on the resident's professional interests and goals. Our program is based on a rotational model driven by the individual resident’s professional development goals. UT Libraries is a large organization and offers a wide variety of areas of specialization for rotations. The range of work experience gained through this position will enable the residents to build essential skills in the field of libraries and/or archives. The residents will receive dedicated professional development funds to support conference attendance. The residents serve as valued colleagues in the organization and will enrich UT Libraries by bringing in new ideas and perspectives, and contribute to strategic initiatives through project work.
The UT Libraries established their residency program in 2018 with the goal of increasing opportunities within the field of libraries and archives for candidates from underrepresented groups. UT Libraries was a member of the ACRL Diversity Alliance from 2018-2023.

Internal applicants
Our program is based on a rotation model, guided by each resident's interests and career goals. A rotation plan for the first year will be collaboratively developed during orientation and will include rotating through at least two and up to four Libraries' units or areas, with opportunities for shorter observations in additional units. This first year allows the resident the opportunity to experience varied work opportunities and survey areas of specialization in which they may have an interest. In the second year, the resident will focus on an area of specialization, deepening their skills and developing specialized experience in an area of their choice with the goal of being able to add one year of dedicated professional experience to their resume. In the third year, the resident will have the opportunity to continue their year two placement or select a new area of focus, and will receive mentorship and support in career development as well as dedicated time to apply to future positions.
UT Libraries is committed to maintaining three resident positions so that residents can participate in a cohort. Residents may start the program at different times, but it is our goal to maintain a cohort.
In their first month, residents are introduced to the major departments and functions of the UT Libraries. They build connections with staff and begin to write their rotation plan proposals.
Rotations are collaboratively designed between the resident, the rotation coordinator, and the residency coordinator, based on the resident’s learning goals and the strategic priorities of the unit. Focus is placed on project work with clear deliverables that relate to the resident’s career goals.
Each resident receives a budget of $4,500 to be spent on professional development and conferences. During orientation, residents develop a professional development plan based on their career goals and skills they wish to develop. Up to 10% of their time is set aside for professional development and skill-building.
Residents are consulted about their preferences and are then paired with a mentor on the UT Libraries staff.
All staff members who participate in and support the residency program participate in an annual program assessment which is used to guide decisions around improving the program.
