When you have identified an important work and want to know what later work has cited it, you can do that. The standard library tool is the Web of Science database. And Google Scholar includes a handy feature for checking "Cited bys."
1. Using the Web of Science: Core Collection, search for the title of an article to come up with the record.
2. Look at the right hand side of the record to easily identify the citing and cited literature.
*These are links so you can easily click to see a list of all the records in the citing literature and the cited references.

2. Look for "Cited by" at the bottom of the entry.
3. Click on the "Cited by" link to view records of citing literature.
*You also may note the Web of Science number reported from the Google Scholar interface as well. The reason these are so different is the quantities of literature included. Google Scholar will include anything it's able to find on the web whereas the Web of Science is a curated collection of journals that meet a standard criteria.
