Authors' Rights & Copyright

Authors' Rights

Did you know that as a student or faculty member at UT, you own the copyright to your own research? This includes your thesis or dissertation, and it's yours for your lifetime, plus 70 years!

What many students and researchers don't know is that they might sign away their copyright when they make an agreement with a publisher. See the Negotiating With Publishers page on the Copyright Crash Course to learn more about how you can protect your copyright when working with publishers.

If you have additional questions about your rights as an author, please contact us.

Open Access Publishing

What is Open Access?

SPARC (the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition) defines Open Access (OA) as the free, immediate, online availability of research articles combined with the rights to use these articles fully in the digital environment.

To put it more plainly: OA is scholarship that is put online for free and available to anyone in the world, regardless of institutional affiliation. It is a growing social justice movement that aims to make scholarship more accessible, especially in the Global South.

If you have questions about submitting your work to an Open Access journal, let us know!
