GeoRef is the primary literature index for the geosciences. It covers the geology of North America from 1669 to the present, and the geology of the rest of the world from 1933 to the present. Contains over 4 million references to geoscience journal articles, books, maps, conference papers, reports and theses. Includes references to all publications of the U.S. Geological Survey. You can search GeoRef on any of these platforms, and each comes with different benefits:
GeoRef on Engineering Village: Can be searched simultaneously with Compendex and Inspec. This is a great option for scholars whose topics intersect with engineering, computer science and other technical fields.
GeoRef on ProQuest: Can be simultaneously searched with SciTech Premium Collection, a database that includes the following indexes: Agricola; Biological Science Index; Earth, Atmospheric & Aquatic Science Database; Environmental Science Index; Meteorological & Geoastrophysical Abstracts; Oceanic Abstracts. This is a good option for scholars whose topics intersect with biology, ecology, environmental studies, marine science, etc.
GeoRef on GeoScienceWorld: This version of GeoRef offers seamless access to the full text of society journals and books that are hosted on the GeoScienceWorld platform.
The Walter Geology Library permanently closed on May 5th, 2025. On May 6, the Walter Geology Library will begin by-appointment operations through December 2025. During this time, we will begin relocating materials in the collection to other library locations.
