History & Impact of your discipline

Broad overviews of your discipline

Research National Societies

What is a society?

A organization that promotes a discipline - they can be quite broad, but some are more narrow. The members of the society are usually academics within the same or related fields, or they may be members of the same profession. They typically have one or more journals or magazines that they publish.

Why is this helpful?

The history of a society may help you understand how the discipline evolved over time in the US (and I would stick to national societies in the US).

You can head to their website, but you can usually search an encyclopedia as well to learn more about a specific society.

How do I learn which societies to investigate?

1. Find a professor here at UT within the discipline you are interested in. What societies or academic associations are they a member of?

2. Try skimming Wikipedia. I have some links below.
