SciENcv

This guide was created in March 2020, prior to the implementation of PAPPG-20 for NSF grants. PAPPG-20 stands for Proposal & Award Policies & Procedures Guide, and requires the use of a tool called SciENcv for the biosketch portion of grants.

Adding Citations from PubMed

Introduction

The easiest way to add citations is via PubMed. PubMed is also a tool that is available from My NCBI, like SciENcv. It's a large database and has vast amounts of literature from the life sciences and biomedical sciences. If you have a lot of literature that falls within the scope of PubMed, I highly recommend using it to get new articles into your My Bibliography.

1.) Search in PubMed

Setting up a search in PubMed isn't difficult. However, I recommend going to the advanced search page that allows you to use search fields.

PubMed Advanced Search

  1. In the Advanced search, select the Author field from the dropdown menu.
  2. Type in the author's last name, first initial middle initial. Example: Johnston, ER
  3. Add this to the search with the button at the right.
  4. Hit search.

TIPS: The Author - Last field and the Author - First field refer to the last author and first author of an indexed work. Not the first name and last name of the author. Because PubMed indexes with first and middle initials, it's important to search on this parameter in the author field. For example: Johnston, ER instead of Johnston, Erin.

You can combine the author search with an author identifier search if you know the faculty member's ORCiD.

2.) Sorting Results

It's somewhat unlikely that your search will only capture the correct articles authored. As a result, it helps to have a copy of the faculty member's CV on had to match up with the citations.

TIPS: If you are really on the fence about whether an author is the faculty in question, you can open up the article from the publisher's webpage and these will usually have the author affiliation in the information about the article.

3.) Adding to My Bibliography

  1. Select all the articles that you know to be associated with the specific author.
  2. Click Send To
  3. Select My Bibliography (or the option to send to a delegates My Bibliography

TIPS: When adding to a My Bibliography account, make sure that you are already a delegate for the faculty member. This will allow you to select the faculty member's My Bibliography account when adding items.
