Insert and Format Notes as You Write

You'll need to have the Cite-While-You-Write (CWYW) Plug-In installed so that the EndNote tab (in this illustration, a newer version of EndNote) shows when you open a Word document.

There are two ways to insert citation:

1. Using the EndNote tab in your document:

2. From within your EndNote Library

  • Select the citation(s) you wish to insert, and click on "Insert Selected Citation(s)
  • Or, select the citation(s) you wish to insert, and click on the quotation marks icon above the reference list.

In Word,  you will notice that your citations and reference list are automatically formatted in whichever style is selected. To change the style, choose from the styles in the EndNote tab's style menu; click on "Select Another Style" to see an expanded menu of options.

Google Docs and Cite-While-You-Write

If you have EndNote 21, you have the option to use Cite-While-You-Write in Google Docs.  See here.
