Journals Term List

What is the Journals Term List and why is it important?

EndNote's Journals term list improves the consistency and accuracy of the references in your manuscripts.  The Journals Term List stores the full title of the journal and several abbreviations that are used in prevalent citation styles.  When using EndNote's Cite While You Write tool, the style chosen for your manuscript will dictate which form of the journal title is used.

In your EndNote library(ies), you can import an accurate Journals Term List. The steps are provided either in:

Steps for Importing the Journals Term List

1. In EndNote, go to Edit > Preferences. On the left side, select Term Lists and uncheck the bottom two checkboxes if they are checked.  Click OK.

2. From the Library menu, select Open Term Lists > Journals Term List. (Note: in older versions of EndNote, you might find Open Term Lists in the Tools menu.) If you do not have any existing terms lists, this option will be grayed out and you can proceed to step 4.

3. Make sure you are on the Terms tab. Highlight the entire list, then click the Delete Term button on the right.

 4. Switch to the Lists tab > select Journals in the box > click on Import List button to the right.

In a Windows machine, this should default to the Terms List folder in your EndNote program files.

In a macOS machine, this folder should default to the Terms folder in your EndNote application files.

5. Select the discipline(s) most relevant to you and click Open.
