About EndNote Basic / Online

EndNote Basic / Online is best used for sharing and for when a user of EndNote Desktop is not at the usual computer.  It is better thought of as a supplement than as a solo tool.

Working with EndNote Basic / Online

EndNote Basic / Online lets you add references to your EndNote library in several ways, including:

  • Importing directly from library databases
  • From library databases, with the aid of "capture"
  • Manually, with you typing in the information
  • With "Online Search"
  • From plain-text, tagged-field files of records
  • Also, you may synch with your EndNote Desktop (if you have purchased that software)

This is the workspace design.  EndNote recommends Click as a tool for finding full text.  Look under "Organize" for a option to find duplicates.

After you've downloaded and installed the Cite While You Write plug-in from the Downloads tab, you'll have the EndNote tab in your Word documents and be ready to take advantage of this feature.

The free EndNote Basic offers a limited set of 21 citation styles.

Paid EndNote Online with Desktop allows access to all 7,000+ citation styles.

These are available in the software, without installation:

Getting Started

Endnote offers three versions of the online product.

1. EndNote online for desktop users - this is available to those who have purchased the EndNote desktop software. See EndNote section of this guide.  It is for working when you are away from your desktop and helps with sharing.

2. EndNote Online with WoS (Web of Science) - Set up an EndNote Online account through the Web of Science database, on or off campus.

  • Choose "EndNote" in the Products menu.

  • Register for an EndNote Online account

Once you have created an EndNote Online account, you can login anytime to your account through either the Web of Science database or by going directly to EndNote Online

(To establish yourself as a UT-Austin person, you may also intitially register on campus without going to Web of Science and may use your UT-Austin Web of Science account.)

3. EndNote Basic - This account is for users who do not have the desktop version of EndNote or who are not affiliated with an institution that has a subscription to the Web of Science. Register here.
