ARH 304: Issues in Visual Culture / Nelson

How can an ephemeral work be collected?

How collectors handle temporary works.

For performances or environmental works of art - basically anything that is temporary, transient and not a tangible object, it can be difficult to wrap your head around how it is collected.

In some cases, you might find objects - such as props, materials or constructed works (such as set pieces or costumes) used during the performance or staging.

Other times, you might find a video or photo that captured the work at the time it was created.

Does anyone own these materials? Does any institution hold them? Check exhibition catalogs and any webpages about the work's stagings.

Can you learn whether the artist her/himself collected the materials for the holding individual/institution, or did someone else collect materials (such as a video or poster for the event)?

If the work was staged multiple times, can you tell what level of involvement the artist had in those subsequent episodes?

Brainstorm keywords about your questions and use the Scholarship page to investigate.
