Following good data management practices can help your research proceed more smoothly and reduce risk of data loss. This workshop will provide an opportunity to learn about dealing with common data management challenges through a series of hands on exercises that participants can work through together. Diverse example research datasets will be utilized to provide a broad overview of general problems researchers might encounter in a variety of different fields. Donuts will be available for in-person attendees!

This workshop will introduce attendees to basic concepts and techniques for working with text as data, focusing on how open source software can be used to implement computational approaches for understanding and examining text. A practical, hands-on exercise using Python will follow the introductory talk.
Data Discovery: Finding & Using Data from Data Repositories

This workshop will provide an introduction to using SQL (Structured Query Language) to store and manage data in open source relational databases like MariaDB, MySQL, PostgreSQL, and SQLite. Gaining familiarity with SQL can help researchers better manage large datasets, construct detailed data queries that can be shared with open source research code, and utilize SQL dependent filtering functionality in open source applications like QGIS software. Donuts will be available for in-person attendees!
