Manuscript Collections

Manuscript collections are collections of paper record, photographic material, physical artifacts, and other items used to document the history of a specific individual, group, or organization. These materials are generally created or gathered by the individuals, groups, or organization. These materials are generally created or gathered by the individuals, groups, or organizations over the course of their life time and can include items such as correspondence, financial and legal documentation, business records, family histories, scrapbooks, and newspaper clippings. The collections listed below are a partial listing of collections.

  • Barbara M. Duke Collection 1974-1982 (13 feet, 8 inches) (women’s rights) - consists of letters, notes, newspapers, clippings, pamphlets, magazines, posters, buttons, instructional materials, printed material, and other ephemera documenting Duke’s activities for and with the National Organization for Women at the local, regional, state, and national levels. Furthermore, the collection relates to her work for and with the Center for Battered Women in Austin, the Austin Networker, and Women in Communications, Inc. 
  • Alice Embree Papers 1962-2013 (3 feet) (women’s rights, human rights, anti-war, social justice) - consists of original material, correspondence, copies of articles, leaflets, newspapers and journals of personal and political history related to civil rights, human rights, anti-war, women’s liberation, and social justice work during the sixties and seventies, and beyond. Organizations being represented include the Students for a Democratic Society (SDS), North American Congress on Latin America (NACLA), Prairie Fire Organizing Committee (PFOC) and Industrial Workers of the World.  
  • Maury Maverick Jr., Papers, [ca. 1835-2000] (civil liberties) (There is also a book on Maverick) - documents the life of politician, attorney, columnist, and civil rights activist Maury Maverick, Jr. 
  • Glen Maxey Papers 1991-2003 (approx. 32 feet) (gay rights) - Composed of correspondence and personnel, office, and legislative files, the Glen Maxey Papers, 1991-2003, chronicle Maxey’s career and activities as a politician. Personnel case files relate to his relationship with his constituents and their concerns, while office files pertain to a number of political, medical, and social issues that he was researching, such as higher education, LGBTQ communities and rights, environmental regulations and legislation, HIV research and medical programs, and affirmative action, among others. 
  • Bettie Naylor Papers [circa 1920s]-2012 (4 feet, 10 inches) (gay rights) - consists mainly of Naylor's personal and professional correspondence during her years as a gay rights and women's rights lobbyist. The papers include printed materials and correspondence related to lobbying and fund-raising, as well as photographs of Naylor with state officials and personal photographs. Also included are DVDs and VHS tapes of events and award ceremonies. 
  • Ring (Mrs. Henry F. "Elizabeth L.") Papers, 1913-1931 (1 foot, 8 inches) (prison reform) - Correspondence, memoranda, petitions, reports, and minutes comprise the Mrs. Henry F. “Elizabeth L.” Ring Papers, 1913-1931, documenting her work through various women’s organizations to effect social and prison reform in Texas. Correspondence with organizations such as the Texas Federation of Women’s Clubs, National Committee on Prisons and Prison Labor, and the Texas Bureau of Labor Statistics illustrate Ring’s influence on government and social affairs.
