Why Perform a Patent Search?

Why Perform a Patent Search?

We often think of inventors when we think of patent searching.  An inventor performs a patent search to assure that no previous patent interferes with the inventor's plan to file a patent application or to use the invention --- personally or through a sale or license agreement.

Other reasons include:

  • learning more about a new field of technology
  • to gain market information
  • In order to track the intellectual property of competitors
  • to "reverse engineer a product
