UT GIS Day

Join the UT Austin community in recognizing GIS Day 2024 on Wednesday, November 20th in the Scholars Lab in PCL! GIS Day is an internationally acknowledged annual event held each November on the Wednesday of Geography Awareness week. It is a day dedicated to appreciating, discussing, and learning about GIS (geographic information system) technology and all that it enables. This year our theme is exploring geospatial artificial intelligence, and we are excited to see how students, faculty, and staff are incorporating open science practices into their GIS work while also providing opportunities for attendees to learn about services and resources that support open science on campus.

Through our UT GIS Day events this year we hope to raise the profile of the innovative GIS work being carried out by the UT campus community. We look forward to partnering with the Department of Geography and the Environment, Campus Geospatial Assets, Jackson School of Geosciences, and UT Open Source Program Office (UT-OSPO) to organize this event. If you are interested in participating, go ahead and reserve 12:00 to 5pm on your calendar on Wednesday 11/20.

Poster Presentation Competition and Proposal Form
To highlight the innovative geospatial research being carried out here at UT Austin, we are inviting UT students to share their work in our poster competition. Any project (with a student first author) that makes use of GIS or involves geospatial data is eligible to enter. A panel of judges will score posters with monetary awards for the top scoring posters. First place will be awarded $200, second place $150, and third place $100. Follow the proposal form link below if you are interested in participating in the session which will take place on Wednesday 11/20 from 4:00pm to 5:00pm in the Scholars Lab in PCL. The deadline for poster submissions is Tuesday, November 5th and there are limited poster spaces available so consider submitting early to secure a place in the competition. Posters may be still be considered for inclusion in the competition after the poster submission deadline if there is still capacity to accept further posters. If you would like to present your poster but do not to want to enter the competition you may select that option in the proposal form. To coincide with UT's Year of AI, the theme of this year's event is exploring geospatial artificial intelligence. Posters are not required to fit this theme, but there will be a special designation for posters entered that are related to geospatial AI.
