Most foundations award organizations rather than individuals. It's easier, for example, to award a newspaper a large grant to to work on a particular story, rather than awarding 10 grants to deserving journalists. Or, large funders may offer grants to smaller organizations that fund individuals. There are exceptions, such as the MacArthur Fellows, which awards large sums to individuals.
Challenge: See if you can find an award, grant or scholarship that is designed specifically for the stage of career that you’re in, i.e. early career, mid-career, senior reporter, veteran, etc. What skills, experiences and/or products (clips, stories, etc.) would make you competitive for this award?
