Omeka

This libguide will help guide the creation of an Omeka account. It will also help with uploading content, setting up collections, and creating exhibits.

Installing Plugins

Installing Plugins

On your site's dashboard, click on Plugins.

This page displays the list of Omeka plugins available and a brief description of their function. Click Install to add any of these plugins to your Omeka site.

A popular plugin is Exhibit Builder. See the Omeka Exhibits page of this LibGuide for more information on how to utilize this plugin.
Another commonly useful plugin is Simple Pages, allowing you to add and edit different pages, like an about page or a blog page, to your site. See the next section for more information about Simple Pages.

Simple Pages

Within Omeka, the Simple Pages plugin allows you to create pages for your site. These pages can contain files, exhibits, items, plain text, and HTML-formatted text.

To access the Simple Pages plugin, click on its label on the left sidebar.

Here, you can choose to view your pages in List View and Hierarchical View. To create your first page, click Add a Page.

Next, you can set a title and slug for the page. The title is the main heading at the top of the page, and the slug is the text at the end of the URL. For example, if you enter test-page as your slug, the URL would be https://[websitename].omeka.net/test-page

If you choose not to enable HTML in the page, shortcodes can be used instead to incorporate media, including images, videos, and exhibits, within basic text fields. To learn more about available HTML shortcodes, visit this page

The basic formatting of many Omeka shortcodes is [object_type id=#]. These shortcodes will allow you to incorporate items, exhibits, and files directly into your page. A few important shortcodes include:

[file]
[items]
[collections]

And, if the Exhibit Builder plugin is enabled,
[exhibits]

For example, to show a specific file uploaded to your Omeka site, you would type [file id=#]. This ID number is taken from the URL attached to the file. After navigating to the item, copy and paste the number at the end of the URL name to get the file ID number.

Please note that including an item using the shortcode [items] will allow users to click the entry to visit its unique page containing citation and metadata information.

Exhibit Builder

This Omeka plugin allows users to create exhibits on their websites, made up of multiple pages and blocks. These pages function differently than the Simple Pages plugin. Here, a page is made of content blocks with multiple options for format. Ultimately, these blocks serve to present the items within your exhibit.

By using Simple Pages, Exhibit Builder, or a combination of both, you can create an informative and effective website for digital storytelling.

Learn more about using this plugin on the Omeka Exhibits page of this LibGuide.

CSV Import

This plugin, CSV Import, is incredibly helpful when importing many items and their associated metadata. However, keep in mind that any images or media uploaded using CSV Import must be imported as image URLs within a CSV file (or comma-separated value file).

To get a CSV file, organize your item metadata using a platform like Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets, and then export your files as a comma-separated value file. Make sure that your metadata can easily be mapped to the Dublin Core and Item Type metadata.

If you are interested in using CSV files and CSV Import in your Omeka site, learn more about CSV Import with this official guide.
