International Zine Month

Resources

From Instagram

Did you know that July is International Zine Month? UT Libraries has zines across its collections, from the UTL Poetry Center to the Fine Arts Library to the Nettie Lee Benson Latin American Collection. Check out this small sampling that celebrates feminist zines and then brave the summer heat to come see more of our amazing collections. You can browse the Fine Arts Library Zines on the 5th Floor, and you can stop by the Benson Latin American Collection and request to see these zines in the beautiful, air conditioned reading room.

What are zines? Zines are unique do-it-yourself publications used by different cultural groups to share ideas and information while bypassing the bureaucracy and elitism of traditional publishing. Zines have been used by activists, musicians, and artists to share creative works and raise awareness of social issues. These light-to-hold booklets of images and text are cheap to produce and purchase, even fun to trade. People want to know about them, so they go to zine fests, meet the artists, look in libraries and bookstores and learn what can always be said about zines – they are limitless in their formats, subjects, and appeal.
