Highlighting Diverse Collections: Ghost Festival
The 15th day of the 7th month of the lunar calendar (this year falling on Aug 18) is widely celebrated in East Asia in many different ways. Vernacularly, the day is known as the “Ghost Festival.” In Buddhism, it is named “Yulanpen” or “Obon” and in Daoism it is known as “Zhongyuan.” In Korea, the day is mostly known as “Baekjung.” Explore here some items from our collection to learn more about the festival and how deaths are mourn, remembered, and celebrated in East Asian societies.
