Brainwashed : Sex-Camera-Power
Nina Menkes explores the sexual politics of cinematic shot design. Using clips from hundreds of movies we all know and love, Menkes convincingly makes the argument that shot design is gendered. Brainwashed: Sex-Camera-Power illuminates the patriarchal narrative codes that hide within supposedly “classic” set-ups and camera angles, and demonstrates how women are frequently displayed as objects for the use, support, and pleasure of male subjects.
Neptune Frost
Saul Williams brings his unique dynamism to this Afrofuturist vision, a sci-fi punk musical that’s a visually wondrous amalgamation of themes, ideas, and songs that Williams has explored in his work, notably his 2016 album MartyrLoserKing. Neptune Frost is an invigorating and empowering direct download to the cerebral cortex and a call to reclaim technology for progressive political ends.
Tantura
Israeli graduate student Teddy Katz meticulously documented a massacre of Palestinian civilians surrounding Israel's independence and was initially celebrated for his groundbreaking work. But soon, he was stripped of his degrees and publicly shamed as a fraudulent traitor. Decades later, incendiary new evidence emerges to corroborate Teddy's initial findings, vindicating him and raising profound questions about how Israelis — and we all — deal with the darker chapters of history.
There Is No Evil
Shot in secret and smuggled out of Iran, this anthology film is comprised of four moral tales about men faced with a simple yet unthinkable choice – to follow orders to enforce the death penalty or resist and risk everything. Rasoulof’s film is an incisive look at the moral strength and inner humanity of its protagonists.
Wife of a Spy
The year is 1940 in Kobe, on the eve of the outbreak of World War II. Local merchant and amateur filmmaker Yusaku senses that things are headed in an unsettling direction. Following a trip to Manchuria, he becomes determined to bring to light the things he witnessed and secretly filmed. When his wife Satoko discovers his true intentions, she is torn between loyalty to her husband, the life they have built, and the country they call home.

Global Movie Day is celebrated on the second Saturday of February every year, to coincide with the Oscar season. It was established to celebrate the power of movies and their capacity to inspire and move people and transform lives.

UT patrons have access to over 100,000 films in various genres and languages; over 80,000 of them are available in streaming through the catalog. In celebration of Global Movie Day, we are highlighting a few films that were recently added to the UT Libraries streaming collection!
